The diamond 2.0 value promise By Randy Field, Chief Revenue Officer Value. What does it mean? Dictionaries will tell you that a product’s or service’s cost is used as the common measuring unit for value. Price fits nicely into a product comparison spreadsheet that can be scored to reach a logical buying decision. This type of comparison shopping can be useful when buying a “commodity” product. However, a Student Information System is an “applied technology”. A School’s SIS is applied to the unique business practices required for their student on-campus/online population, career requirements, accreditation, funding and other needs. One-size-does-not-fit-all. So, how do you determine the value of an applied technology? An alternate way to look at “value” is using “best [...]

Cybersecurity Due Diligence When Purchasing a Career College, FERPA & GLBA Compliance It’s more than just Antivirus updates and OS patches! It is FERPA & GLBA Complaint as well. Schools, colleges, and universities are perhaps the last places one might think would interest the “cybercriminals.” After all, what could they potentially hope to gain from an attack on a soft target like an educational institution? Well, that is specifically why there is a sudden spike in cyberattacks on such institutions (see sidebar) – because they are SOFT TARGETS! When purchasing a career college or when making a decision to merge with another educational institution, college and university administrators must exercise additional cybersecurity due diligence aspects of the [...]

Dimond Student Information Systems (SIS) understand that in an increasingly digital age, it is critical that schools factor in and establish comprehensive cybersecurity practices. The U.S. Department of Education passed a new set of requirements in its Title IV Regulation 34 C.F.R. § 668.23(a) calling for Title IV schools to incorporate comprehensive data protection and management strategies into their annual budgets, otherwise risking the loss of title and funding. Subject: URGENT: Federal Government Shutdown Good Morning, All: As you are probably aware, effective Saturday morning at 12:01 am the Federal Government shut down. Please be advised that COD and G5 will continue to operate during the shutdown, at least in the short-term. Pell and Direct Loans are forward-funded, meaning that the money being spent today (2017-18) was appropriated in the FY17 Federal Budget. In addition, a large portion of the funding for these programs is considered “mandatory” funding and will remain allocated to the programs that are required by existing law. Should the shut-down continue more than a week, the Department will bring back a number of employees from furlough and the programs could continue as normal for [...]

Last week, security analysts announced two of the most damaging cybersecurity threats on record: Spectre and Meltdown. These threats can obtain passwords, log-ins, personal info, intellectual property (IP), tap into secured databases, as well as collect SSL keys and more. Unlike the Distributed Denial of Service (DDS) attacks of last October with Mirai, wherein networks were being overloaded to the point of shutdown, the Spectre and Meltdown attacks occur at the processor-level and affect just about everyone. Meltdown specifically affects all Intel microprocessors and a handful of ARM-based microprocessors, which allows for a rogue process to read any you computer memory, regardless of whether it should be able to or not, even through encryption. Spectre, however, has a wider reach; [...]

One of the frameworks used to help provide analysis and metrics for school growth is the degree to which the school is utilizing systems and processes that are scalable. In other words, if the school is to grow and become say, twice its current size, are the processes and systems in place currently appropriate and efficient for that new size? It's sometimes tempting for school owners (or school presidents, school directors, etc.) to assume that such issues will be resolved when the growth comes. The problem with kicking the can down the road is that so many variables that lead to school growth (in terms of enrollment, programs and placements) are wrapped up in the culture of the school [...]
